I think most readers will be at least vaguely familiar with Movember, given how simple but powerful the concept is: men around the world growing moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness and funding for men’s health. More specifically, men’s cancers (Testicular & Colon) and mental health. I first grew a moustache for Movember back in 2009, and have participated many times since. I have to admit however that saying I “grew a moustache” is debatable, given I really struggle to sprout any kind of meaningful facial hair. In fact, I was voted as having the “Worst Moustache” at my business school several years ago.
This cause obviously now carry significant weight for me, and the timing of entering into remission on October 31st 2024, literally the day before Movember, couldn’t have been scripted better. I was able to rally 26 friends and coworkers to join my Movember team, and together we raised EUR 10,000 (!) for Movember through donations and a wild techno party hosted in Nuremberg.

The next year in 2025, I was asked to become an official Movember Community Ambassador and so will do my best to create even more awareness and promote awareness for men’s health causes. Here are a few reasons why it’s so important:
1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer
Testicular cancer is the most common cancer for young men
3 out of every 4 suicides are men, and is the leading cause of death for young men
Men are more avoidant of seeking help, from healthcare professionals or even just their friends and family, in many cases because it’s perceived as more masculine to just suck it up
If I had followed Movember’s advice and been practively checking my testicles regularly, perhaps I could have caught the cancer earlier and avoided metastisis and the need for chemo
If you want to join Movember and grow a mo, raise money or move for the amazing initiatives Movember enables, you can do so by following this link: https://movember.com
